Iconic … Santorini is built upon volcanic foundations. Photo: John Sones/Lonely Planet
Amid steep cliffs and a moonscape summit, Marian McGuinness finds Santorini’s got a hot reputation.
As our ferry approaches the volcanic island of Santorini, I visually scoop off the man-made layer of sugar-cube villas and cobalt-domed churches. I squint into the sun and can almost see a family of pterodactyls circling the banded cliffs on lava-heated thermals.
This is one impressive caldera and I’m Continue reading » -

Port stops and local culture are the attractions on sailings along the ragged fjords, writes Mike Heard.
Norway is pushing for more Australians to cruise its coastal ferry system. Hurtigruten, which operates 14 vessels linking 34 ports along 1500kilometres of coastline, has launched a promotional drive that includes two-for-one pricing during the European summer.
Australians account for only 1 per cent of passengers on the vessels, which can carry an average 700 people in standard cabins on Continue reading » -

Seventeen British men stood trial dressed in nun’s habits on the Greek island of Crete for flashing their bottoms in public, but walked free after no one showed up to testify that their behavior was offensive.
Police said they had arrested the 17 men, aged between 18 and 65, early on Sunday at the popular resort of Malia and a prosecutor charged them with exposing themselves in public and offending religious symbols.
“They were dressed like nuns, carrying crosses, but wearing thongs under their Continue reading » -

Rangers will keep trying to catch a four-metre croc lurking in the mangroves of Queensland’s Fraser Island, as long as there’s a risk to tourists and boaties.
Wildlife officer Rob Allan says the saltwater crocodile is ignoring tasty treats intended to tempt it into two traps along the Great Sandy Strait on the southwest side of the World Heritage listed island.
“We are a bit surprised because each of the two permanently moored traps we’ve set up have a pig’s head in them and the smell of that Continue reading » -

Sheriden Rhodes soaks in the solitude at an exclusive Whitsundays resort.
Woodwark Bay is mesmerising in the fading light of day. The last of the sun’s rays play on the Whitsunday Passage and overhead a full moon rises over the string of islands.
A manicured lawn dotted with swaying coconut trees stretches to the water’s edge where small waves crash upon the shore. I am the only one here apart from a lone catamaran anchored way off in the distance and a grazing wallaby.
It’s a sensation Continue reading » -

The successful candidate Continue reading » -

From Lent (the Netherlands) to Trinity Peninsula (Antarctica) via Jesus Island (Quebec), Christianity can take you around the world – to islands where it is Christmas every day: one in the Pacific Ocean, the other in the Indian Ocean.
In theory, you could fly from Christmas (Indian Ocean) to Christmas (Pacific Ocean) across the International Date Line in successive days, and enjoy two Christmases on Christmas Island. But you’d have to be crackers.
